The Netherlands is home to 34 professional football organizations, each led by a general director. This role stands out as one of the most demanding and high-profile positions in Dutch sports. These directors balance a unique mix of responsibilities—navigating sporting, financial, and social issues—while also engaging with fans, governments, and numerous other stakeholders. Succeeding in this role requires a rare combination of strategic, multi-dimensional thinking, as well as a collective commitment from all directors to ensure the sustainability of professional football in the Netherlands.
This week, we collaborated with KNVB Expertise to address these challenges head-on. Together with the general directors, we hosted a two-day program focused on sustainable leadership. The sessions provided a rich opportunity for directors to explore the tools and strategies needed to foster resilient leadership in a complex environment.
The program was inspiring and constructive in every respect, due in large part to the invaluable insights shared by our remarkable guest speakers and facilitators. Special thanks to James Kerr, Graham Potter, Edwin van der Sar, and Klaas Dijkhoff for their contributions.
As we look forward, it’s clear that collective efforts like this are essential to keep Dutch professional football thriving and resilient. Sustainable leadership isn’t just a vision—it’s the path forward for the entire football community.
